Achievements during F.Y. 2022-23


  1. Temporary restoration of Balole Syphon

    • Balole syphon located in Balole Nallah near village Dharap at RD 34400 m of Main Ranbir Canal was constructed in the year 1967.
    • It has a discharge carrying capacity of 742 cusecs and provides irrigation water supply to a number of villages in R.S.Pura, Suchetgarh, Arnia, Pandorian and part of Bishnah area in district Jammu, thereby covering a CCA of 22128 hectares.
    • Balole syphon was completely damaged in middle portion due to flash floods in Balole Nallah on 11/08/2022 and 15/08/2022.
    • The work “Temporary restoration of damaged Balole Syphon of Main Ranbir Canal at RD 34400 m near village Dharap” was allotted to M/s P&R Infra Projects Ltd. for an amount of Rs. 2.85 crores.
    • The scope of work listed out providing and laying 02 no., M.S. pipe conduits of length 33 m, 2.0 m dia. each in the central damaged portion connected with the left-over portion of the syphon structure in order to restore the irrigation water supply temporarily to the farmers of R.S. Pura, Suchetgarh, Arnia, Pandorian and part of Bishnah.
    • The work for temporary restoration of Balole syphon was started on 24/09/2022 and irrigation water supply was released on 15/10/2022 in a record time of 22 days thereby saving paddy crops worth Rs. 200 crores.



  2. Desilting of canals

    • Due to high silt content in the rivers falling in district Jammu, main canals and their distribution network gets badly silted up thereby reducing the discharge carrying capacity of canals.
    • Therefore, annual de-silting of canals is undertaken, after enforcing canal closure, to ensure adequate irrigation supply to farmers.
    • Before year 2017, closure of canals in Jammu province was enforced for a period of 119 no. of days w.e.f. 15th Dec to 12th Apr.
    • From year 2017 to 2022, the period of canal closure was reduced from 119 no. of days to 102 no. of days w.e.f. 1st Jan to 12th Apr.
    • The duration of canal closure was further reduced in the year 2023 to a period of 58 days w.e.f. 7th Jan to 7th Mar on the request of Agriculture Department for providing irrigation water to wheat crop which was at milking stage.
    • It was 1st time in the history of canal closure that the desilting works were accomplished in a record period of 58 days and canals were recharged at least one month earlier than the previous practice.
